Dr Solomon Arase’s Lifestyle Of Patriotism And Nationalistic behaviour ~ Sixt-Media Lane Consult.

Patriotism is generally defined as having a genuine love for one’s country, including feelings of pride, devotion and vigorous support and attachment to the homeland as well as fellow citizens

As we celebrate the nation’s democracy and national rebirth amid what appears to be intransigent partisan political divides on many fronts, it seems a good time to ponder what patriotism and nationalism means in Nigeria today.

Are you feeling patriotic or nationalistic as we pause to celebrate this wonderful and amazing figure Dr Solomon Ehigiator Solomon, former Inspector General Of Police and the Immediate past chairman Police Service Commission .

As he is about to add another year to his age on the 21st of June 2024 , their is the need for us to reflect on some of the numerous impacts he has been making in the life of humanity outside his official and professional engagements as a career retired senior police officer who got to the peek of his Job as an Inspector General Of Police and Chairman Police Service Commission respectively .

While it is great to be able to get away, have a picnic or take in a parade, celebrating Democracy days, workers day, and even independence day in our hearts and minds should mean much more than that.

Our nation needs us to reflect on its true meaning during these challenging times.

What does patriotism and nationalism mean to you?

Since our school days, we have been taught what patriotism means and have taken part in the traditions that reflect it — from reciting the pledge of allegiance to singing the national anthem and other patriotic songs during public commemorations and events.

Patriotism is generally defined as having a genuine love for one’s country, including feelings of pride, devotion and vigorous support and attachment to the homeland as well as fellow citizens.

But patriotism is often confused with nationalism. While they may share the love of country, they are not the same.

Patriotism, historically and now, is based on positive values and feelings like freedom, justice and equality. There is the fundamental belief that the system of government and fellow citizens are inherently good and work together for a better quality of life for all and that has been the core value Dr Solomon Arase has been sworn to upheld and has been tremendously engaged and committed in doing so to set a high standard as a result of his love for humanity via the duo foundation of his beloved mother of blessed memory, Mercy Igbe-Arase ( MIAF) Foundation and Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation ( SEAF) in a bid for a continuous impact on humanity.

Late Chief Mrs  Mercy Igbe-Arase, a seasoned old-fashioned teacher who insisted that knowledge is the only enduring asset one can acquire in one’s life
time, the only wealth worth pursuing and the bedrock for the attainment
of self-esteem and excellence in all endeavours.

The foundation was initiated by her son; Dr. Solomon Ehigiator
Arase, together with friends and family to continue her legacy and
honour her memory.

The foundation’s history is rooted in the values and principles that she embodied, including a strong commitment to education, legacy of service, knowledge and empathy.

Since its inception, the Mercy Igbe Arase Foundation has made
significant strides in achieving its objectives including:

Awarding scholarships annually to students, providing them with the
financial support needed to pursue their academic dreams.

The foundation also Organizes community development projects that drive positive
change such as health outreach programs and skills training programs in Ora, Edo State and Collaborating with local organisations to promote human rights,
focusing on vulnerable groups and advocating for social justice.

The foundation’s consistent efforts have led to a tangible impact in the
lives of many, fostering a brighter future for individuals and communities
alike.

By providing access to education, promoting community
development and championing human rights, the Mercy Igbe Arase
Foundation is leaving a lasting legacy in the lives of those it serves.
The Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation was incorporated in the
year 2022 by Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, a distinguished retired
Nigerian Police Officer who served as the 18th Inspector General of Police and also the immediate past Chairman Police Service Commission.

Dr Solomon Arase can be said to be retired from official engagements but definitely not tired in rendering selfless impactful services to humanity, and that is what Nationalism and patriotism is all about.

Nationalism has positive elements of love, pride and protection of country, it  fosters the overall well-being of a country and all of its citizens.

If you are to be identify as a nationalist, on which side of nationalism can you be identify?

But embracing the good of nationalism — love and protection of country — and the values of patriotism could make for a winning combination.

What would a “Patriotic Nationalist” look like?

Perhaps like this.

Rather than fighting against and undermining our sacred documents — the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and its Amendments — we would devote time to understanding, upholding and applying them.

Instead of denigrating and ignoring our branches of government and the roles they play in enabling and protecting our institutions and individual rights, we would promote respect and support for them.

We would see our sacred documents, branches of government and institutions as works in progress and not something that should be weakened, discarded or destroyed.

As patriotic nationalists, it means caring enough for our individual and collective well-being by adhering and abiding by the rule of law in all our conduct and behavior, and demanding the same from others. would eschew, oppose and work against policies and actions that undermine or threaten the nation’s character, identity and stability at home or abroad.

Dr Solomon Arase eschews, oppose and works against policies and actions that undermine or threaten the nation’s character, identity and stability at home or abroad.

It is not “us” against “them” especially within our borders, and as we continue to assume roles on the world stage that are not only in the best interests of Nigeria but all humanity.

Patriotism and nationalism need not be diametrically opposed. There can be real strength in their coexistence when we embrace and live out the positives.

Even if you think being a “Patriotic Nationalist” is an impossibility based upon what being a nationalist or patriot means to you, then with which do you most identify?

Which do you think our country needs most in these divisive and precarious times we find ourselves?

Perhaps, committing to the good aspects of both creates a bridge that we can cross together to tackle and solve the challenges our nation faces.

No matter what you call it or how you label it, the health and well-being of this nation moving forward will require that most of its citizens at least be strong patriots. A country will not survive without them.

During the fight for Nation’s independence, a renowned American author in 1776, Thomas Paine wrote about the need for a country to have happy patriots who draw strength and become even more committed during adverse times or national crises and we have such leaders in Dr Solomon Arase.

Guided by his conviction that education is a treasured asset that
never loses its value, Dr. Arase founded the organisation to champion
educational excellence, empower individuals and foster community
development. Through the foundation, Dr. Arase continues to inspire
and make a lasting impact on the lives of many.
In its inaugural year, the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation hosted its
maiden annual lecture series, themed “Citizens’ Inclusion in Security
Management: The Edo State Model.” The landmark event featured the
presentation of cheques to the first batch of scholarship recipients and a
donation of essential security items to local governments in the Edo
South Senatorial zone. The donations, made possible through the
generosity of six patriots, included:

  • Fifty motorcycles with helmets
  • One branded Sienna Van
  • One Thousand, Four Hundred branded shirts
  • One Thousand, Four Hundred branded fez caps
  • One thousand, four hundred whistles
  • Two Hundred raincoats
  • Two Hundred and Ten torchlights
These contributions aimed to enhance security and community
development in the region as they are also aligned with Dr. Arase’s
vision of empowering individuals and fostering community growth
    through education and security initiatives.
In its second year, the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation
expanded its reach by not only catering for students of the Edo South
Senatorial District but also including children of late Inspectors and Rank
& File of the Nigeria Police Force who died in service. The foundation
marked this significant milestone with two consecutive events

A heartfelt thanksgiving service which was held at Benin City, Edo
State, to express gratitude for the foundation’s progress and impact and
*Immediately following the thanksgiving service, the foundation hosted
its second annual lecture series, themed “The Benefits of Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Civil and Criminal Cases by Law
Enforcement Agencies in Nigeria.” This thought-provoking lecture aimed
to explore the advantages of ADR in promoting effective conflict
resolution and enhancing the criminal justice system.
The event also witnessed the presentation of cheques to the second
batch of beneficiaries of the SEAF scholarship scheme, further
demonstrating the foundation’s commitment to supporting educational
excellence and empowering young minds.
In its third year, the Foundation marked a more subdued milestone,
opting for a more intimate celebration. The foundation hosted the
beneficiaries to a private lunch and cheque presentation, focusing on the
scholars and their achievements. Despite the more solemn tone, the
event remained a testament of the foundation’s unwavering commitment
to supporting educational excellence and empowering young minds.
The Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation (SEAF) and the Mercy
Igbe Arase Foundation share a common mission to support
undergraduate studies by recognizing academic excellence and
potential. Guided by two primary objectives, the foundations aim to:

  1. Enhance the capacity of security agents through collaborative
workshops and conferences with law enforcement agencies and relevant
government entities, focusing on fundamental human rights compliance.
  2. Provide educational opportunities for underprivileged individuals,
promoting academic excellence and personal growth.
Both foundations firmly believe that education is the cornerstone of
personal and societal development and are committed to fostering

academic excellence. Whilst the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation
focuses on supporting:

  • Indigenes from the Edo South Senatorial District, comprising Egor,
    Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Ovia North-East, Ovia South-West, and
    Uhunmwonde Local Governments, and
  • Children of late Police inspectors and rank & file
The Mercy Igbe Arase Foundation specifically caters to students
from the Owan West and Owan East local government areas of Edo
    State.”
Summarily, ninety-nine students have been registered under both
    foundations;
Where Thirty-Eight (38) have graduated and successfully completed
their mandatory service year and currently sponsors a total number of
    sixty-one (61) undergraduates in over 20 institutions.

On this, the most patriotic holiday we celebrate, what do you think? What thoughts are you passing on to future generations?

Amid all the fireworks, picnics, parades, travel plans, and parties — all of which we take for granted — do you consider yourself at least to be a real patriot, a patriotic nationalist, neither?
