The voice of the people was heard loud and clear on the floor of the House of Representatives this week as Hon. Munachim Ikechi Alozie, Member representing Obingwa, Osisioma and Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, formally submitted a petition against Aba Power Limited over unbearable electricity tariffs and opaque billing practices affecting thousands of households and businesses.
The petition, which has since gone viral, seeks urgent legislative intervention to compel the power company to adopt a fairer, more transparent, and more affordable billing system for consumers within its network covering parts of Abia State.
THE PEOPLE’S MANDATE IN ACTION
Presenting the petition on the floor of the National Assembly, Hon. Alozie did not mince words. He described the situation as “economic strangulation” of hardworking Nigerians who are already battling inflation, fuel costs, and business challenges.
“Mr. Speaker, Hon. Colleagues, my constituents in Obingwa, Osisioma and Ugwunagbo are crying. They are being made to pay for darkness. They receive outrageous estimated bills, pay for services not rendered, and have no clear channel for redress,” Hon. Alozie stated.
“Electricity is not a luxury. It is the backbone of small businesses, of students reading at night, of hospitals saving lives. When you make power unaffordable, you are killing enterprise and punishing the poor.”
The petition specifically calls for:
1.Immediate review and downward adjustment of current tariffs by Aba Power Limited
2.Mass metering to end estimated billing and promote transparency.
3.Establishment of a consumer complaint and resolution desk within the constituency.
4.House Committee investigation into the operations and billing template of Aba Power Limited.
A LEADER WHO LISTENS, WHO FIGHTS, WHO DELIVERS
This bold move further cements Hon. Munachim Alozie’s reputation as Opara Ukwu Ugwunagbo, Nkuma Ndi Obingwa, and Nwachinemere Ndi Osisioma and also as a leader who stands with the people at all times.
Since assuming office, Hon. Alozie has consistently positioned himself as a pro-people, pro-business, and pro-development lawmaker. From facilitating skills acquisition programs for youths, to constituency solar street light projects, to now confronting power sector injustice, his focus has remained one: “Put the people first.”
Political observers and community leaders have described the petition as “timely and courageous,” noting that many representatives shy away from confronting powerful corporations.
“This is why we endorsed him for 4 + 4 = 8,” said a community leader from Ugwunagbo. “Where Munachim stands, we stand. He speaks when others are quiet.”
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The petition has been received and referred to the House Committee on Power for immediate investigation and public hearing. Hon. Alozie assured constituents that he will follow the process to a logical conclusion and will not relent until justice is served.
“I was sent to Abuja to be the voice of my people. And that voice will not be silenced until Aba Power gives our people light they can pay for, and bills they can understand,” he affirmed.
CALL TO ACTION
Hon. Alozie also urged constituents experiencing billing issues to document their complaints and channel them through his constituency office for onward submission to the House Committee.
