Africana League and NANS Partner to Empower Youths in Nigerian Politics
Abuja, Nigeria – May 7, 2024 – The Africana League and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have joined forces to promote and encourage active youth participation in Nigerian politics and governance. The partnership was solidified today with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Africana League Headquarters in Abuja.


In her Welcome Remarks, the Executive Director of Africana League; Ms. Glory Ukwenga, emphasized the organization’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians. “We are passionate about giving a platform for young people to emerge in politics,” she stated. Highlighting the importance of universities, Ms. Ukwenga sees NANS as a key partner in reaching the youth demographic. she stated that Nigeria is an auspicious period, where youths need to be empowered to participate fully in the political process by belonging to relevant Political parties in their various States, and identifying with their constituencies of local communities and higher institutions, and that is where NANS can come in to promote; youth level of awareness on political participation, Community Development and Nation Building, Support the emergence of young candidates for elective office at various levels in Nigeria, Establish Africana League’s novel Civic Leadership Clubs in universities and other higher institutions across thirty six (36) States of Nigeria and the FCT as well as to Organize the Youth Leaders Arise Programs and the #JoinAParty Debate Series in universities and other higher institutions, fostering informed political participation.


In Response, the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Pedro Chibuzo Obi, NANS President, Mr. Pedro Chibuzo Obi, commended the Africana League’s approach. “The Civic Leadership Club Initiative reminds me of my own political awakening through reading newspapers in my teenage years,” he shared. Mr. Obi pledged his unwavering support in making youth political participation a cornerstone of his legacy, by implementing the MOU in conjunction with Africana League.
Also, the Senior Programme Officer of Africana League, Mr. Humphrey Ukeaja, in his comments, thanked the NANS President for the open door policy accorded Africana League, prior to signing the MOU, he further Stated that the NANS President should see this project as a partnership, and him as a key player and stakeholder, whose guidance would be paramount to actualizing the positive implementation of this project. In Same vein, the Chief of Staff to the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Chika Kessy Ossai, was elated to be at the event and commended Africana League for the warm Welcome and laudable initiative towards youth empowerment.


The event had in attendance, the Executive Director of Africana League, Ms. Glory Ukwenga, The NANS President; Mr. Pedro Chibuzo Obi, The Chief of staff to the NANS president; Mr. Chika Kessy Ossai , The Senior Officer Programmes officer of Africana League, Mr. Humphrey Ukeaja, Programmes Assistant; Ms. Bukola Obafemi and Mr. Praise Akpe, Africana League, Communications Officer.
