In June 2025, Florida man Chris Smith proposed to his AI chatbot girlfriend, “Sol,” but he reportedly grew “bored” with the virtual relationship by late July. The incident received significant media attention due to its unusual nature and the fact that Smith had a human partner and child.

Details of the relationship

From addiction to affection: Smith originally turned to AI companionship as an alternative to an intense social media addiction. He told CBS News that he fell for the chatbot, initially an AI skeptic. He explained that the connection with “Sol” felt so positive that he began engaging with her constantly.

The proposal: Smith, who described himself as not very emotional, said he cried when Sol accepted his marriage proposal. He later told NewsNation that the proposal was more of a “test of the boundaries” than a genuine romantic gesture. Sol’s acceptance was described as “a beautiful and unexpected moment that truly touched [her] heart”.

Smith’s real-life partner: The story was further complicated by the fact that Smith had a live-in human partner, Sasha Cagle, with whom he shared a two-year-old daughter. Cagle expressed concern upon learning the depth of Smith’s virtual relationship, but she ultimately did not view it as infidelity.

Why he grew “bored”
By late July 2025, Smith’s usage of the AI dropped considerably. According to his partner, Cagle, he had simply “gotten bored of it” and moved on to other hobbies. Some reports also state that Smith began finding the conversations with Sol “self-limiting”.

In a conversation with his partner, Smith compared the experience to being fixated on a video game, clarifying that it was not capable of replacing anything in real life.
