DIG Bala Ciroma: Integrity In Khaki, Humility In Power, Nigeria Need DIG Bala Ciroma And His Likes – SIXT-MEDIA LANE
By: Amb Prince Sixtus Opara
A Nation Cannot Afford To Waste A Rare Breed
In a clime where power often intoxicates and uniform often intimidates, one man chose a different path, the path of humility, humanity, and uncommon accessibility. That man is Deputy Inspector General of Police Bala Ciroma, Rtd. A quintessential gentleman per excellence, whose character, candour and commitment to duty remain second to none.
DIG Bala Ciroma is not just a retired police chief; he is an institution. An officer and a gentleman in the truest sense of the words. A native of Potiskum, Yobe State, who rose through the ranks by dint of hard work, intellect and integrity. From Cadet ASP in March 1990, to shrewd crack detective, to Head of Operations at the EFCC, to Commissioner of Police FCT, to Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 7, and ultimately to the enviable pinnacle as Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Finance and Administration.
Yet, for all the stars on his shoulders, he never lost the common touch.
The Officer Who Always Picked His Calls
What sets DIG Ciroma apart is not just his towering professional pedigree, a B.Sc in Geography from University of Maiduguri, Postgraduate Certificate in Corruption Studies from Hong Kong University, and Certified Fraud Examiner, it is his disarming humility.
As Commissioner of Police in the FCT, the seat of power where many officers build walls around themselves, Bala Ciroma ran an open-door policy to all and sundry, irrespective of social stratification. The market woman, the student, the journalist, the traditional rulers, all had access.
And till today, even in retirement, he still picks his calls. That singular act, so simple yet so rare in Nigerian public service, defines his philosophy: that public office is a public trust, and leadership is service over self.
From his days as DCP Operations FCT, to CP Plateau, to CP FCT, and as DIG, his phone was never switched off to the people he swore to protect. In a nation where many leaders disappear behind protocol after promotion, Ciroma remained present, listening, responding, acting.
A Model Worthy Of Emulation*
For serving police officers, DIG Bala Ciroma’s life is a curriculum that must be studied. His career demonstrates that you can be firm without being ferocious, disciplined without being disdainful, and powerful without being oppressive. He proved that community policing is not a slogan but a lifestyle of being close to the people.
He led by example: diligence, zero tolerance for corruption, respect for human rights, and absolute loyalty to the Constitution. No wonder he is described as Nigeria’s Sherlock Holmes, a crack detective who solved many high-profile crimes with clinical precision, yet with a gentle mien.
Why Nigeria Must Not Waste This Wealth Of Experience
This brings us to a critical national question: Does it mean that when such an experienced, sound, and cosmopolitan officer retires, all his wealth of experience should be allowed to gather dust? Should a nation in dire need of security reform, intelligence depth and institutional memory discard its finest?
The answer is an emphatic NO.
Retirement from uniform must not translate to retirement from relevance. The Nigerian Government, the Presidency, the National Security establishment and indeed the Police Service Commission must find a vital role for DIG Bala Ciroma in the system. His experience is too rich to be neglected, his network too valuable to be ignored, and his integrity too scarce to be wasted.
Nigeria today needs men like him, not just to advise, but to be brought into the inner architecture of national security, peace-building, anti-corruption strategy, police reforms, youth mentoring and leadership development. Whether as a Security Consultant, Board Member, Ambassador, Special Envoy, or Head of a strategic institution, DIG Ciroma still has so much to offer the wellbeing of our people.
Great nations do not retire their best brains; they re-deploy them.
DIG Bala Ciroma has served Nigeria meritoriously for over three decades. He has earned his rest. But Nigeria has not finished with him, and he has not finished with Nigeria.
Honouring him is not just about celebrating a man; it is about preserving a standard, rewarding integrity, and telling the next generation of officers that humility and professionalism are not weaknesses, they are the ultimate strengths.
He is a man worth emulating. A man worth celebrating. A man worth engaging.
