Political analyst Dickson Iroegbu has accused Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo of using the ongoing controversy over the state’s debt profile to target former governor and 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

According to SIXT-MEDIALANE, Iroegbu made the allegation while speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, amid a renewed dispute over the financial obligations inherited by successive administrations in Anambra.

The controversy followed the release of records by the Anambra State Government detailing loans it said were incurred or inherited during Obi’s tenure as governor.

The state government has maintained that eight external loans linked to projects executed during or inherited by Obi’s administration remained outstanding. It put the balance of the loans at about $92.35 million, equivalent to approximately ₦127.37 billion as of June 30, 2026.

Obi, however, rejected the claims and subsequently released his 2014 handover document, which his camp said showed the financial position of the state when he left office. The document indicated a net positive balance of more than ₦86 billion Reacting to the dispute, Iroegbu alleged that the controversy was politically motivated and described it as an attempt to tarnish Obi’s record. He argued that the relevant financial records were available and challenged the Anambra State Government to make documentary evidence supporting its claims public.

Iroegbu maintained that the dispute be resolved by allowing the documents from both sides to be independently examined rather than relying on political arguments.

The analyst also warned that the ongoing disagreement could become part of the political history surrounding the state and called on the government to provide records capable of substantiating its allegations.

The controversy continues to generate competing claims, with the Soludo administration pointing to outstanding loan obligations inherited from previous governments, while Obi’s camp has relied on the former governor’s handover documents to dispute the characterization of his administration’s financial position.
