PROF. CHARLES SOLUDO EZE ONYE AGWANAM POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY

It has been said by many critical thinkers that the surest way of a man’s downfall is pride. Even the Holy Book – noted that if you humble yourself, you will be exalted, but if you exalt yourself, you will be humbled; hence the premise of this discourse on the claims being made by our distinguished professor of economics, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, that all he has ever achieved in this life have all been based on merit and not favour from anyone quickly comes to mind. While I am not contesting the academic intelligence of Prof. Charles Soludo, I strongly doubt if this has been replicated in governance since he became the Governor of Anambra State.

The premise of my argument will be based on available fact presently in public domain. Prof. Charles Soludo, through the massive support and influence of Chief Willie Obiano, his predecessor, who ensured that he not only got the APGA governorship ticket in the state, but also bankrolled his election into office, hence Soludo’s initial deceptive premise that Anambra State was intact, and that there is nothing broken that needed to be fixed, as was alleged by the main opposition candidates; but this hymn has changed over the years.

Chief Willie Obiano, in his quest to get Soludo accepted by Anambra State electorates brandished Soludo’s academic record and public office curriculum, presenting him as the best governorship candidate available during this said period. Soludo on his part promised the people of Anambra State that he was going to bring to bare his wealth of knowledge in economic, and turn Anambra State economy to that of Dubai Taiwan; but three years down the line, the people of Anambra State are yet to see the promised Dubai-Taiwan economy promised to them by Prof. Soludo. I think this is political deception!

Under Prof. Soludo, Anambra State presently occupies 33rd position out of 36 in security of lives and properties in the country; 34th position out of 36th in Education; the state is almost among the bottom five in terms of foreign and local investment in the last four years; far behind in terms of economic growth; yet Prof. Soludo in his usual political arrogant style mocked one his predecessors, Peter Obi, for investing the state fund in an established brewery company operating in the state. Ironically, this same company is the highest employer of labour after the state government, and pays the highest tax to the same state government, more than any company operating in the state.

Under the watch of Prof. Charles Soludo, the state has not been able to attract either local or foreign investors due to heightened state of insecurity and multiple tax system. This should have been a major concern to the state governor rather than granting multiple interviews and using medium of political campaigns to mock and insult his political opponents, especially that of the APC, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife. He has continually mocked the academic qualification of the duo, yet his own academic qualification has not been able to translate to good governance. This is a reality he has failed to contemplate on!

As many Anambra stakeholders had advised Soludo to desist from personality attacks in his election campaigns which he has refused to listen. He has continually accused Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu as being a land grabber. Ironically, most of the notorious land grabbers in Anambra State are close associates of the state government. They are major benefactors of the state government, and they dine and wine in secret and public with top government officials in the state. Does this in essence suggest that Prof. Charles Soludo is a hypocrite who accuses his political opponent, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of something he is guilty of just to score a cheap political point?

The eze onye agwanam political philosophy being exhibited by Prof. Charles Soludo must have made him to be deaf to all the calls from Anambra and South-East stakeholders, as he was urged to desist from throwing unnecessary tantrum and insults on his political opponents;  rather he should concentrate in pursuing issue-based politics as not to heat up the polity in the state. Prof. Charles Soludo’s insistence of throwing tantrum and insults on his political opponents, especially that of the APC in the state, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife only suggests that he is afraid of the political weight of the duo, and a likelihood that he would lose the forthcoming governorship election to the APC candidate.

While I am not holding brief for Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the APC, I think Prof. Charles Soludo would do better if he soft-pedals in his unnecessary and unwarranted verbal attacks and insults targeted at Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu. His actions paints him in a bad light politically, and only suggests that he has not done enough for the people of Anambra State in his first term in office as Governor of the State, because if he has done enough, he would have concentrated his energy in marketing his achievements to Anambra electorates while seeking for a second term in office rather than indulging in throwing tantrum at every given opportunity on Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, as that is not a healthy way of playing politics in a civilized clime.
