Politicians’ Self-Interest: A Recipe for Chaos Ahead of 2027 Elections?
By Charles Edet Esq PhD
The recent surge in killings across Nigeria has been linked to the build-up to the 2027 general election, with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, pointing accusing fingers at politicians as the masterminds behind the violence. This revelation raises fundamental questions about the motivations of these politicians and the measures being put in place to prevent further bloodshed.
The CDS’s Scathing Indictment
Gen. Musa’s statement is a damning indictment of the political class, implying that some politicians are deliberately fuelling violence to discredit the government and advance their own interests. This is a disturbing trend that threatens the very fabric of Nigeria’s democracy.
A Perplexing Question
As Gen. Musa aptly asked, “How do you kill the people you want to govern? What do you gain from it?” This question highlights the absurdity and recklessness of politicians who would rather destabilize the country than lose an election. What kind of leadership do they aspire to provide if they are willing to decimate the very people they claim to want to lead?
The Role of Terror Financiers
The CDS also disclosed that terrorism continues to thrive in Nigeria due to local and foreign funding. The identification of international collaborations and foreign funding of terrorism is a worrying trend that requires urgent attention. The Attorney-General of the Federation, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, and other agencies are working to track down terror financiers, but legal hurdles have slowed down the process.
Strengthening the Legal System
Gen. Musa lamented that the country’s legal system frustrates terrorism prosecution, calling for faster trials, stiffer laws, and the creation of special courts for terrorism cases. This is a crucial step towards ensuring that those responsible for violence and terrorism are brought to justice.
Measures to Arrest the Projection
As the 2027 elections draw near, it is imperative that the armed forces take concrete measures to prevent further violence. What plans are in place to address the security challenges posed by politicians who are willing to fuel violence for their own gain? How will the military work with other security agencies to ensure that the elections are peaceful and credible?
The Need for International Cooperation
The CDS highlighted the security risks posed by instability in the Sahel region, pointing to open markets for arms and ammunition in neighbouring countries and Nigeria’s porous borders. International cooperation is essential in addressing these challenges, and the military’s collaboration with Sahelian counterparts is a step in the right direction.
With regards to our collective desire to end insecurity, a sacrificial alignment between the masses and the security agencies to synergies is essential where sentiments and ethnicity is buried, to tackle and address our collective safety from political desperadoes.
In every respect, the CDS’s statement is a wake-up call for Nigerians to demand more from their leaders. As the 2027 elections approach, it is crucial that politicians prioritize the welfare and security of Nigerians over their own self-interest. The armed forces must take concrete measures to prevent further violence and ensure that the elections are peaceful and credible. The fate of Nigeria’s democracy hangs in the balance, and it is time for decisive action.
