Equitable Reward: Celebrating Sports Victory and Security Gallantry*

By Charles Edet Esq, PhD

The recent celebration of the Super Falcons’ victory in the Women’s African Cup of Nations has sparked a much-needed conversation about recognizing and rewarding excellence in Nigeria. The government’s gesture of awarding each player $100,000, $50,000 to coaches and staff, and three-bedroom homes under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Housing Scheme is indeed heartwarming. However, this celebration of sports excellence has also highlighted the stark contrast in how the nation treats its security agents who risk their lives to protect the country.

The unsung security heroes are in their rights,  more patriotic for protecting the people and securing the nation for peace and for  investors to invest.

Soldiers, policemen, and other security personnel who fight against terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, and insurgency often return with lifelong injuries, trauma, and disabilities. Yet, they are frequently forgotten, neglected, or given mere tokens of appreciation. The disparity in treatment between sports heroes and security agents is glaring. While athletes are celebrated with grand gestures, security personnel are often left to struggle with the physical and emotional scars of their service.

The sacrifices of our security services heroes should not be only on their discharge or retirement benefits, but celebrated in every heroic step taken to decimate terrorists, kidnappers and other acts of violent criminality for  fairness and justice.
It’s not about taking away from the Falcons’ achievement, but about recognizing the sacrifices of those who defend the nation. A nation that celebrates sports but neglects its heroes of war sends the wrong message. Entertainment shouldn’t be valued more than sacrifice, and image shouldn’t be prioritized over service. The government must reflect on this disparity and consider more equitable rewards for security agents.

The Renewed Hope Agenda is conceived for inclusivity celebration and even political Social, and economic  development.
Also, the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme is a commendable initiative, but it would be even more impactful if it included security agents who have risked their lives for the nation. Building hospitals and rehabilitation centers for wounded soldiers would be a more meaningful way to show appreciation for their service. Allocating dignified support to those who faced bullets would be a more fitting tribute to their bravery.
True patriotism isn’t just about cheering victory; it’s about caring for those who paid the price for peace. The government should prioritize recognizing and rewarding the sacrifices of security agents, who create a conducive atmosphere for athletes to train and compete. By doing so, Nigeria can demonstrate its commitment to valuing the bravery and sacrifice of its security personnel.

At this point, it is pertinent to state that, as we celebrate the Super Falcons’ achievement, let’s not forget the unsung heroes who defend our nation. It’s time for the government to recognize the sacrifices of security agents and provide them with the support and rewards they deserve. By doing so, Nigeria can promote a culture of appreciation and inclusivity, where both sports excellence and security gallantry are valued and celebrated.
