By Charles Edet Esq, PhD

As Nigeria continues to navigate the complexities of its democratic journey, it’s essential to reflect on the sacrifices made by individuals who played a crucial role in shaping the country’s electoral history. One such individual is the late Prof Humphrey Nwosu, the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) during the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The annulment of the June 12 election, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s fairest and freest elections, marked a dark period in the country’s democratic history.

The military’s overbearing powers, led by General Ibrahim Babangida, quashed the electoral process, plunging Nigeria into a period of intense political turmoil and darkness.

However, the legacy of June 12 lives on, and the role of Prof Humphrey Nwosu in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process has not been forgotten. The Movement for the Consolidation of Democracy (MOCODE) has called for National Recognition of Prof Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to Prince Clinton Kenechukwu, National Publicity Secretary of MOCODE, Prof Nwosu deserves National recognition for his courage and commitment to democracy. Clinton, had emphasized that President Tinubu, known for his purposeful leadership and commitment to balancing democratic expectations, would likely justify Prof Nwosu’s role in the June 12 saga.

*Tinubu’s Role in the Fight for Democracy*

President Tinubu played a significant role in the fight against military rule and the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. As a key member of the Afenifere group, he worked tirelessly to promote democratic ideals and oppose the overbearing powers of the military.

Tinubu’s commitment to democracy is evident in his leadership style, which prioritizes the rule of law, human rights, and good governance. His administration’s “New Hope Agenda” aligns with the principles of democracy and good governance that Prof Nwosu defended, pronounced and  fought for the genuine result that led to the known: That MKO Abiola  won the June 12 election.

*Honouring Prof Nwosu’s Legacy*

MOCODE’s call for national recognition of Prof Nwosu’s contributions is a timely reminder of the importance of honouring individuals who have made significant sacrifices for democracy. Prof Nwosu’s courage and integrity in the face of military oppression serve as an inspiration to Nigerians and a testament to the power of democratic ideals.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, it’s essential to learn from the past and honour those who have contributed to the country’s progress. Prof Nwosu’s legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of democratic principles, electoral integrity, and the rule of law.

It’s a truism that there is no way Chief MKO Abiola would be mentioned without adding the late  INEC icon who presided over the election , just like General Babangida under whose government democracy suffered political amputation.
Therefore the story of Prof Humphrey Nwosu is a testament to the power of courage and conviction in the face of adversity. As Nigeria celebrates its democratic progress, it’s essential to honour individuals like Prof Nwosu who have made significant contributions to the country’s electoral history.

President Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to democracy provide a fitting backdrop for recognizing Prof Nwosu’s legacy. MOCODE’s call for national recognition is a timely reminder of the importance of honouring those who have fought for democracy and good governance.

Let us honour Prof Nwosu’s legacy by promoting democratic principles, electoral integrity, and the rule of law. As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, we must draw inspiration from individuals like Prof Nwosu who have made significant sacrifices for the country’s progress.
